I have got too much positive feedback at work.
-Said no-one ever.

No matter if the act is small or big, visible to all company or just a small empathic gesture towards a close colleague. The story behind all the sparkle

Frank the Brilliant is an app ideated, designed and developed by Industry62. But why a consultancy company ends up building a feedback app when there are already plenty of them to choose from?

Well - let’s take few steps back. Industry62 was founded to follow lean principles: lean, flat organisation and true partnership in owning. While none of these are really new issues - they still kinda are. At least from the perspective of pre-existing tools and methods. Tools and methods are mostly built from top-down approach and rely on organisation hierarchies. Traditionally employee feedback has been gathered once or twice a year. Sometimes more often but almost never in real time. Not a good match for a modern and fast moving organisation.

In our business people tend to work in different projects. Interaction between people in different projects often still happens as peer-to-peer professional and social levels. This is really valuable to organisation, yet often neglected. This was something we wanted to address in the very beginning. We started to think a way to boost the peer-to-peer interaction and communication inside the team. Other corner stone was that it should be possible to give feedback instantly and do it easily. Giving diamonds should be easy enough that one wouldn’t leave it for later occasion - and possibly forget it before getting it done.

Easiness of giving feedback wasn’t the only thing we did foresee to be essential. We also thought the app would fulfill its promise only, if all feedback received would generate positive feeling. Getting feedback should always feel good. So there should be no way to compare one’s feedback with another. Each feedback should be a positive gift - not a disappointment when someone else gets more.

POC & FTB 1.0

Based on these premises we started to sketch the first solution which would fulfill the needs. Following the lean principles we created a super simple prototype which we started to use ourselves. Month after month we got better understanding what kind of feedback is valuable, which attributes are essential, and most importantly how extremely good it feels to get positive feedback from your colleagues.

The first versions served as a proof of concept, and we saw Frank the Brilliant becoming a steady tool and enabler for our positive and encouraging business culture.

After few iterations and versions we found the winning combination of features and functionalities. Half a year later, the first MVP version got replaced with full functioning mobile app with features of both giving and receiving feedback.

Value for companies

For leaders the data revealed unseen hidden social powers. The reports exposed bullet-proof professionals with unbeatable skills and competence, social enablers and emotional supporters, trusted encouragers and sparkly atmosphere lifters. After months of getting and giving feedback, each employee started to have a unique social profile, also as a diamond giver, as well as receiver.

Frank the Brilliant didn’t only bring light to individual employee profiles, but to overall company outline. Different months highlighted different themes. During some months solid competence was mostly valued, while during others inspiring and supporting colleagues. There were months of generous diamond giving, and others which were less inspiring. After all, the data gave a new subsurface vision of company feelings, serving as an emotional thermometer. Instead of following employee satisfaction quarterly or every half year, we started to see the company pulse on time.

Frank the Brilliant for all

We created Frank the Brilliant from our needs, but also for others who think alike. So please take it in the use and make your colleagues smile!
