Cross-border ePrescription

Cross-border ePrescription

Patients can buy prescribed medicines in any EU country, ensuring continuity of care. 25 European countries are joining the project, with 9 already using the service daily. The goal is to cover all of Europe.

The cross-border ePrescription enables the patient to buy their prescribed medicines in a pharmacy of another EU country.

This system addresses several issues, including:

•  Continuity of care: Individuals traveling or living in different European countries can access their medications more easily and quickly, ensuring they receive necessary treatment regardless of location.

•  Safety: Digital prescriptions can help minimize medication errors and allow healthcare providers and pharmacists quick access to a patient's medication history.

Efficiency: A digital system reduces the administrative burden associated with paper prescriptions, making the process of issuing and fulfilling prescriptions faster and smoother.

Data sharing: Effective data sharing between different countries' healthcare systems helps doctors make better decisions and tailor treatments to patient needs.

The data exchange service takes place over the secure OpenNCP platform (a subproject of The eHealth Digital Service Infrastructure), which is developed and managed by the European Union. To join the service, countries must create digital readiness and interface their local systems with this platform.  Industry62 implemented the integration platform in Estonia and developed needed interfaces for the Estonian Prescription centre and pharmacies.

25 European countries have joined the project, which will implement the services in the following years according to their national capabilities. Countries that are not yet part of the project can join the data exchange network in the future. The general goal is to expand the service to cover the whole of Europe. Currently, the service is implemented and in daily use between 9 countries.
